About Local Motion

Local Motion is Vermont’s nonprofit statewide advocate for walking and biking. Founded in 1999 to reconnect the Island Line Rail Trail from Burlington to the Lake Champlain Islands, the organization’s mission has expanded to bring walking and biking within reach for all Vermonters and to help communities across Vermont become great places to walk and bike.

A team of dedicated year-round staff, supported by a seasonal crew of ambassadors and more than 200 passionate volunteers, delivers programs and services to more than 25,000 people each year. In 2015 more than 7,329 children learned bike skills through Bike Smart, 458 adults took part in Everyday Bicycling education taking the next step to making biking part of their everyday lives, 13,723 people make the connection to and from the Champlain Islands on the Island Line Bike Ferry, and technical assistance to towns across Vermont helped to advance walk/bike projects in 28 communities. Following a merger with the Vermont Bike and Pedestrian Coalition in 2015, Local Motion is now pursuing a legislative agenda to improve road safety and driver education.

Position Description

The Business Services Manager is Local Motion’s lead for engaging businesses statewide in promoting walking and biking and in making the case for business investments in walk-bike infrastructure. While the Business Services Manager is by no means responsible for everything we do with and for businesses, he or she is the glue that holds all the pieces of our business-focused work together. The Business Services Manager’s core responsibility is to support businesses and business leaders in making biking and walking an easy and attractive option for their employees and customers.

This is a new position that reports to the Deputy Director. The Business Services Manager will work as a team with three other staff: the Walk-Bike Tech Assistance Manager, the Outreach & Volunteer Manager, and the Community Engagement Manager.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Build Local Motion’s business member program. Develop and manage a business member recognition and benefits program and use it to build Local Motion’s base of business members. Manage all communications with current and prospective business members, including solicitations and renewals. Launch a business-focused newsletter and develop creative and engaging content that makes the case for business engagement with Local Motion and with walking and biking generally.
  • Run Local Motion’s Everyday Bicycling Project. Oversee Local Motion’s network of contracted bike workshop trainers, supporting both trainers and training host sites in setting up, marketing, and running workshops statewide. (Most workshops are workplace-based, with others offered via community centers, recreation programs, or other public venues.) Develop new resources and strategies to extend the reach and enhance the impact of the project.
  • Assist businesses with applying for Bicycle Friendly Business recognition. Maintain and continually add to a prospect list of potentially interested businesses, using other Local Motion staff as well as outside partners to develop leads and make contacts. Make the case in one-on-one meetings and group settings for the benefits of applying, and help interested businesses fill out the application. Conduct site assessments with participating businesses to help them identify and pursue improvements and policy changes that will make them more bike friendly.
  • Integrate Local Motion’s business-oriented work with that of other partners that have a similar focus. Meet regularly with partners such as Go Vermont, CATMA, Upper Valley TMA, and other transportation demand management organizations. Build relationships with downtown business associations, chambers of commerce, and other business groups to promote our services via their networks. Reach out to and support health-focused partners such as Rise VT to assist them in delivering services to businesses that meet their goals as well as Local Motion’s.
  • Sell bike racks and other associated products. Through Local Motion’s advocacy dealer relationship with Dero (a major national manufacturer of bike racks), identify and pursue leads for potential sales, including municipal and institutional clients, new development projects, and more. Assist clients with selection of racks and provide guidance regarding siting and installation. Prepare quotes, close sales, and follow up as needed to ensure customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Very strong entrepreneurial drive, with a track record in building program revenues and impact over time
  • Comfortable and experienced in a business environment, with the skills and focus needed to provide consistently excellent customer service
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to track multiple leads, quotes, and contracts as well as oversee and support multiple contracted staff
  • Passion for bikes and biking and for vibrant, people-centric communities; technical knowledge about bike racks and about everyday bicycling skills desirable but not required, as we will train the right candidate
  • Proficiency with all standard office software, along with solid writing skills, basic graphic design ability, and familiarity with spreadsheets
  • Willingness to travel around Vermont (approximately 10%-25% of job), including occasional overnight trips
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle, as well as the ability to lift 50 pounds

Salary and Benefits

This is an hourly position with a flexible work schedule. Starting wage is $17 to $18 per hour, plus paid time off. This is initially a half-time position, but there is substantial potential for growth in the Dero bike rack sales portion of the job. Local Motion will support increased hours for the position as specific revenue targets are met.
