Advocacy Advance – a partnership between the League of American Bicyclists and the Alliance for Biking & Walking – launched in 2009 to supercharge state and local advocates in the United States to maximize public funding spent on bicycle and pedestrian projects.
There are rules, processes and programs governing federal, state and local funds. Some communities have been successful at taking advantage of the full range of opportunities, while others have not. Advocacy Advance researches funding opportunities, programs, and rules and uses trainings, grants, and technical assistance to spread lessons from successful regions to the rest of the United States.
Advocacy Advance deploys Rapid Response Grants to help advocacy organizations take advantage of unexpected opportunities to access public funds for bicycling and walking investments.
As the go-to resource on funding biking and walking projects through the federal transportation bill, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century or MAP-21, Advocacy Advance provides Navigating MAP-21 Workshops to advocates, agency staff, and elected officials to help communities tap into the full range of federal transportation dollars.
Advocacy Advance has produced more than 45 reports and resources on funding bicycling and walking projects. Direct technical support has helped communities tap into new funding sources, advocates win increases in funds, and agency staff navigate the web of policies and procedures that lead to successful projects.
Advocacy Advance bridges federal policy and on-the-ground implementation. We are a trusted resource for communities as they plan, fund, evaluate, and build 21st century multi-modal transportation infrastructure. Through workshops and grants, Advocacy Advance program has leveraged over $130,000,000 in public funding for biking and walking improvements across the country.
