What We Do

NYC_Bridge

Strong communities with safe biking and walking options don't build themselves - they are the direct result of concerted efforts to improve streetscapes for people.

That's why the Alliances focuses on supporting the people who make those change happen on the ground: leaders at over 200 state and local biking and walking advocacy organizations. We give advocates the tools to win campaigns that transform communities into great places to bike & walk.

We do this work in several arenas:

Capacity Building

All leaders need space away from day-to-day work to stratege and learn from peers. Our hands-on trainings, on-call coaching, and national trainings for biking and walking advocates help the people behind the active transportation movement grow stronger. Learn more »

Measuring the Movement

Reliable data are essential for any viable movement. We compile available data on bicycling and walking in the United States, benchmark growth in the active transportation advocacy space, and create customized guides for state and local biking and walking advocacy organizations. Learn more »

Getting People Moving

Regular physical activity is essential for healthy lifestyles. We get people on their feet by increasing the number, size, and frequency of Open Streets initiatives across North America and supporting not-for-profit bike projects that recycle discarded bicycles. Learn more »

Biking & Walking Policy

For too long, our transportation has made it difficult, inconvenient, and even unsafe to travel on foot or by bike. We're working to change this by connecting advocates and agencies with public funding for sustainable transportation infrastructure and programs. Learn more »
