"Is the Movement Losing its Edge?"

In this edition of Roundup, Transportation Alternatives calls out their police commissioner, BikeHouston big-ups their new mayor, Bike East Bay turns tragedy into a new facility, Tennessee advocates push for a bill that would fine motorists for veering into the bike lane, the Wisconsin Bike Fed asks if the movement has lost its edge... and more!

Advocacy Avenue

Transportation Alternatives hosted its second annual Vision Zero Cities conference — and came out strongly against NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton's claim that achieving Vision Zero isn't feasible.

BikeHouston was proud of its Mayor Sylvester Turner, who inspired the crowd at the Texas Trails and Active Transportation conference with his strong support for bicycling and the city's new, ambitious draft Bike Plan.

After mobilizing the public to take action, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance in Portland cheered the news that "69% of people surveyed by Metro think the agency should continue to dedicate Regional Flexible Funds to biking and walking."

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association capitalized on a metro shutdown by encouraging and providing tips for folks to commute by bike.

And the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition urged residents to "use [their] bikes to survive the NJTransit strike."

Bike Austin's board chair chatted with NPR about the increase in helmet cameras among cyclists.

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition described how "Fat Bikes and Level-B Roads Go Together Like Peanut Butter and Jelly."

BikeSD described how San Diego's new Downtown Mobility Plan could be a "game-changer" for biking and walking.

Equity Intersection

California Walks described how it's working with local government to ensure a proposed ballot measure will benefit southeast LA County, "which is home to a high number of low-income communities and communities of color in dire need of active transportation and transit investments."

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is mobilizing to make bicycling safer in the Tenderloin, an area that includes "thousands of seniors, children and people with disabilities."

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia shared how the Little Bellas are engaging more young women in mountain biking.

The Green Mobility Network lifted up the work of My Calle 8, a movement of neighborhood residents in the iconic Cuban-American community calling for the one-way, three-lane road to be repurposed with wider sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes, a bus lane and two-way car traffic.

SFBC is working to make biking safer in the Tenderloin.

 

Infrastructure Inlet

Bike East Bay won a big victory as its petition helped to secure a bike lane on Fulton Avenue, the site of a recent crash.

Bikemore celebrated the coming of bike share to Baltimore.

And the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition is getting ready to welcome their new Cyclehop system.

Bike Delaware shared that the state's longest paved bike trail will be complete by the end of the year.

Transportation Alternative applauded the announcement of 15 miles of protected bike lanes to be installed in New York City in 2016.

And the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition previewed eight protected bikeways coming to the Twin Cities this year, too.

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition celebrated $5 million in funding for 10 new bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure projects.

The Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition pumped its fists for its designation as the state with the most bike paths per land area (according to our new Benchmarking Report).

Bicycle Daytona made the case for a low-stress network in its city.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance in Portland said they can't wait to ride a new segment of the Westside Trail made possible by a collaboration between Nike and Washington County.

Bike Pittsburgh applauded the announcement that the city will receive a $1.5 million grant to improve its "700+ city-owned steps, an important and necessary component of our pedestrian infrastructure."

Legislative Lane

In light of the National Bike Summit legislative asks, the Wisconsin Bike Fed asked "Is the movement losing its edge?"

Tennessee advocates are supporting a bill that would make it illegal for motorists to cross into a bike lane (except to "avoid a crash, move out of the way of an emergency vehicle, get into a parking spot or complete a turn") and level a $50 fine for drivers that do.

Bike Walk Connecticut is mobilizing its members to take action for "HB 5403, An Act Increasing Penalties For Failure To Yield To Pedestrians In Crosswalks And Failure To Exercise Due Care To Avoid Hitting A Pedestrian Or Cyclist."

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia organized a sign-on letter to PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards calling on her "to remove the state's "Bicycle Occupancy Permit" requirement as a policy obstacle to making Pennsylvania’s roads safer and better able to accommodate bicyclists."

GObike Buffalo is urging its members to tell their state policymakers to ensure $20 million for complete streets is included in the state budget.

The New York Bicycling Coalition is pushing to make e-bikes legal in the Empire State.

Georgia Bikes! lauded a group of trail safety advocates who biked to the state capitol to ask their Senator to "support current legislation that clarifies the law protecting pedestrians & cyclists in crosswalks."

The Virginia Bicycling Federation shared its 2016 Legislative Wrap-Up, which was "not the finish to the session we had hoped for."

Meanwhile, BikeWalkLee called the Florida state legislative session "disappointing for bike/ped and safety advocates."

Programming Promenade

Following a not guilty verdict for a motorist who struck and killed to bicyclists, Bike Cleveland organized an awareness rally that drew more than 200 participants.

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia shared that, according to its 2015 Bike Counts, ridership is down — and made the case for better infrastructure to boost the numbers.

BikeWalk NC promoted a new resource for drivers: "Why Bicyclists Ride Like they Do: A Quick Guide for Curious Motorists"

Bike Pittsburgh was all smiles after 150 new hires at PricewaterhouseCoopers built 60 bikes for their Positive Spin youth program.

PEDS and Georgia Bikes! announced a new partnership with the Georgia Department of Transportation to help implement elements of the state's Strategic Highway Safety Plan.
