Getting People Moving

Regular physical activity is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. And true public health means making sure that everybody has regular access to everyday exercise.

Open Streets Project

Open Streets initiatives - daylong events that block motorized traffic from long stretches of city streets in order to create space for biking, walking, playing, and dancing - help people connect with their communities in new ways. These exciting initiatives are increasingly common in cities seeking innovative ways to increase active transportation, improve public health, bring new customers to local businesses, and improve air quality.

The Alliance works in partnership with The Street Plans Collaborative to document and grow Open Streets initiatives throughout North America. Head over to the Open Streets Project site to learn more »

Bicycle collectives or community bike shops are not for profit organizations that take in discarded bicycles, teach youth and adults hands-on mechanics, and donate or sell upcycled bikes back to the community. Many shops host earn-a-bike programs, wherein youth or adults spend time learning repair skills and then earn the bicycle they build themselves. These nonprofit shops make low-cost sustainable transportation accessible to more people. They are especially valuable in low-income communities where mainstream bike shops are inaccessible for many people.

The Alliance for Biking & Walking hosts the Bike Collectives Wiki, an information hub for community bike shop organizers to share knowledge and expertise. Learn more at BikeCollectives.org »
