Transportation Alternatives’ mission is to reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile and to promote bicycling, walking, public transit. Since our founding in 1973, TransAlt has paved the way for remarkable changes in New York City’s transportation infrastructure: the lowering of the citywide speed limit, the extraordinary growth of bicycling and launch of Citi Bike, street redesigns on Queens Boulevard and 1st and 2nd avenues, public plazas like Times Square and Select Bus Service. TransAlt has made these good ideas a reality through the combined efforts of our staff and network of more than 160,000 supporters, dues-paying members and a committee of activists working locally in every borough of New York City.
Position Description
Right now, Transportation Alternatives (TransAlt) is at the forefront of New York’s Vision Zero effort to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries in the city by 2024. To make our Vision Zero advocacy more effective, we must expand our reach and expertise into the digital realm. To help us meet our goal to grow our supporter base to 3.5% of the NYC population, we are hiring an experienced Digital Director to lead the digital efforts behind our policy prowess and grassroots community organizing. The position will report to the Deputy Director and work closely with the Communications Director.
Primary Responsibilities
This position will oversee organization-wide digital communications and digital engagement. Responsibilities include:
Digital Strategy & Team Captain:
- In collaboration with a cross-functional team, conceive of and manage digital campaigns to grow our base of reachable subscribers to 3.5% of NYC’s population
- Ensure and facilitate close collaboration between members of the Policy, Development, Organizing, and Communications teams to design and execute digital strategy goals
- Oversee and manage the digital communications calendar, including email production, social media and event marketing strategy
- Create and manage reports for weekly communications meeting that facilitate strategic conversations between directors and senior management
- Implement online organizing strategies to advance TransAlt’s advocacy goals, including online grassroots engagement, email, social networking, web, and mobile
Staff & Project Management:
- Oversee and mentor 5 communications staff whose core functions include email strategy and production, social media, design, website updates, digital acquisition, and digital marketing
- Ensure the high-quality execution of all digital assets across websites, email, social channels, SMS, and in branding and design work
- Develop the annual budget and goals for online communications efforts including advertising and marketing campaigns, monitor costs and provide updates as requested
Marketing:
- With guidance from the Communications Director, ensure message consistency and editorial standards across all TransAlt digital communications properties
- Draft and oversee drafting of riveting email and social media copy that compels members, donors and our grassroots supporters to take action
- Build strong marketing strategies for TransAlt’s annual bike tours and Vision Zero Conference
Web, Email, Acquisition, Technology:
- Oversee creation of all the organization's digital communications materials including website, newsletters, email and social media
- Maximize the use of TransAlt’s existing technology, as well as set and continually assess new products and tools that can help us meet our goals
- Establish annual website and social media goals and provide reports for tracking, analysis and budgeting purposes
- Create and execute priorities for testing to optimize website and email
- Manage free (Google Grant) and paid digital advertising campaigns for the program and development departments
- Manage website updates and strategy across multiple sites, including SEO
- Monitor updates on features and releases in Luminate Online and develop recommendations for best use practices
Qualifications
- 5-8 years experience creating online content and marketing campaigns in a non-profit or political campaign setting
- Minimum three years supervisory experience required
- Knowledgeable about key digital advances and able to spot trends and analyze what would be beneficial to TransAlt.
- Solid understanding of digital tools, processes and techniques for membership development, advocacy campaigns, list building and social media
- Strong organizational skills and experience in managing complex projects
- Exceptional ability to write creatively, copy-edit, and proofread in a rapid response environment.
- Eagerness to explore new tactics and engage with partners and other leaders in the space.
Specific skills and technology qualifications:
- Social media: Fluent in current and emerging social media; experience managing content and advertising
- Email: Experience managing complex email schedules across messages and segments. Experience constructing mobile-first HTML emails and using Luminate Online software Experience reporting on email testing and analytics and developing data-driven strategy
- SEM: Experience managing Google Adwords account
- Web: Experience managing and updating content in Drupal. Experience with SEO, including identifying key search terms. Experience using Google Analytics including an in-depth understanding of conversion tracking. Interest in forward-thinking website strategy and ability to manage messages and strategy across multiple web properties
- Luminate Online / Convio: Familiarity with a full range of LO functionality, including email, eCRM, donation forms, action alerts/petitions, event registration, peer-to-peer, gift shop, etc.
- Familiarity with Salesforce CRM (specifically Luminate CRM) a plus.

Salary and Benefits
