This week, Smart Growth America released Dangerous By Design 2014. This report is packed with data on pedestrian fatalities in every county, metro area, and state – highlighting the areas with the most pressing design flaws for walking. 

Despite some improvements at the state and local level, Florida remains the most dangerous state for walking

INFRASTRUCTURE NEWS

Atlanta advocates are working to further improve Peachtree street, a busy downtown road. #TransformPeachtree, y'all. 

Bike Walk KC has hesitations about a new downtown funding plan that would set aside half a million dollars for pedestrian detection. 

A new parking lot and drive-through threaten the M Path, a multi-use path in South Florida. 

Arlington County, VA will fund snow removal on its multi-use path system. 

LEGISLATION LANE

The 2014 Florida legislative session was a mixed bag for biking and walking advocates. The good: 

  • $15 million was approved for the Coast to Coast Connector Trail
  • A new state law requires that the driver of a vehicle involved in a crash that results in serious bodily injury to a person to immediately stop the vehicle and remain at the scene of the crash. It will be a second degree felony not to comply, and the court must revoke for at least 3 years the drivers license of a person convicted of leaving the scene of such a crash.

The Connecticut governor has officially signed the hard-won Vulnerable Users bill into law.
