SCHOOL'S IN

As September comes to a close (how did that happen?), kids, parents, and advocates are back in school mode. Biking and walking advocates across North America are doing their part to educate kids about safe walking and biking as they work to make schools and their surrounding neighborhoods more bike- and walk-friendly. 

Bicycle Colorado shows why parents are so important in making schools more bikeable and walkable.

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association gives parents tips on how to bike with their kids this fall (featuring insight from the Alliance's own Megan Odett!). 

San Francisco advocates are getting excited for Walk & Roll to School Day

INFRASTRUCTURE INLET

Infrastructure stories are slowing as the building season winds down in many states.

Following installation of a protected bike lane, ridership tripled on Seattle's Second Avenue.  

Transportation Alternatives is making a big push to fix dangerous arterial streets throughout the city, which make up just 15% of streets but see 50% of bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities. They're hosting a series of blog posts called "Broken Boulevards," focusing on specific corridors that local activists are working to fix.

A New York City attorney filed a class action lawsuit against the Department of Motor Vehicles for systematically charging bicyclists who received moving violations with a surcharge that should only apply to motorists. 

Pittsburgh advocates are pumped that their city has seen a 408% jump in bike commuting since 2000.

This week, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition started a series of blogs on why the anti-bike, anti-transit Proposition L would be bad for the city. We can't link to it, but I'm sure that Google knows where it is. 

PROGRAMMING PROMENADE

Riders have logged over 750,000 miles in the Bicycle Transportation Alliance's Bike Commute Challenge . . . and it's only halfway through. 

Tour de Fat in Fort Collins and Denver together raised more than $200,000 for bike advocacy organizations! 

WABA held their annual 50 States Ride, a circuitous 60-mile ramble around every single state avenue in Washington, DC.
