BEST OF 2014

A personal announcement from this communications director: I'll be moving on from the Alliance for Biking & Walking for a new position at a DC-based startup. It's been a real pleasure to work with the stellar team at the Alliance, with the phenomenal network of biking and walking advocates all across North America, and with folks who care deeply about building a more healthful and equitable transportation network. Thank you for your passion, your involvement, and your eyeballs. I look forward to staying involved in the active transportatation space as an active member of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and as a board member with All Walks DC.

This will be the last Roundup of 2014, and for now, the Biking & Walking Roundup will go into hibernation. Several Alliance member organizations spent some time this week looking back at our movement's accomplishments over the past year. Here are a few snapshots of 2014 progress: 

Bike Pittsburgh's 2014 wins, by the numbers: 638 first-time members, 408% bike commuter rate increase, 350 volunteers working the equivalent of one full-time staff person. 

This year, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia helped install artsy bike racks all over the city.

Residents of Hamlin Park, Buffalo are pushing to bury the Kensington Expressway and rebuild the beautiful Humboldt Parkway.

Tucson's Living Streets Alliance proposes 16 pedestrian capital improvement projects throughout the region. 

Circuit Trails in the Philadelphia area scored two big grants to support planning, construction, and communications. 

WalkBoston offers suggestions on the Neponset River Greenway. 

Oregon's Bicycle Transportation Alliance continues pushing for protected bike lanes on SW Barbur.

The Market Street bike lane in San Francisco just got plastic bollards outside the Twitter building. 

Florida advocates are pleased that the state DOT will fund a feasibility study for a Cape Coral to Pine Island shared use path. 

Calgary's Transportation & Transit Committee will look at next steps and maintenance options for the city's bikeway network. 

BIG PICTURE BOULEVARD

Three years after winning Model Grants from Advocacy Advance, Bike Pittsburgh and the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition have both seen big success. 

Among the questions raised by recent killings of unarmed Black men by police officers: "Can men of color afford to be physically active? If so, where, and under what conditions?"

Tamika Butler is the new Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. Congratulations, Tamika!

ADVOCACY AVENUE

LEGISLATION LANE

Philadelphia Councilwoman Cindy Bass has introduced a resolution calling for hearings on a Vision Zero plan. 

The recent U.S. 2015 federal budget bill, nicknamed the Cromnibus, included an important bike/ped safety measure. 

Washington state advocates thank Senator Patty Murray for her work in advocating for the measure. 

PROGRAMMING PROMENADE

Bike Maine – the lobstah state's annual multi-day bike ride – generated $395,000 for local communities. 

GOBikeBuffalo helped 30 kids get bikes for the holidays. 

Oregon's BTA profiles an advocate from the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon, an organizational partner.
