NATIONAL BIKE SUMMIT HIGHLIGHTS

We were happy to see many old friends at the National Bike Summit this week in Washington, DC! A highlight for us, as it is every year, was the Advocacy Awards ceremony. It was a great success, the room was packed and raucous, everyone had a blast, and we got the chance to honor some folks in our community who really deserved it.

Keith Holt of Wisconsin Bike Fed won the Advocate of the Year award but was so completely not expecting it that he didn't even show up to the awards ceremony -- the Alliance's Naomi Doerner had to give him his prize the next day at the Bike Summit! Here's a full rundown of the award recipients.

BikeTexas did a little #TBT to remember 2012, when they won the Alliance's Innovation Award in recognition of their VIP bike rides for elected officials and policymakers. The organization also urged members to support this year's Bike Summit Lobby Day from wherever they are by calling to ask their representatives with the same "asks."

A Delaware state senator and state representative led the state's Bike Summit attendees to meet with Delaware's representatives in Congress on the Summit's Lobby Day.

The Women's Bicycling Forum was a great success, too -- you can read some of the Twitter commentary from the day on the League's Storify here. And Liz Cornish Jones of the League of American Bicyclists' Women Bike program explains that there's no one answer to the question of how to get more women cycling.

BikeAthens' biggest Summit highlight was a panel discussion about Vision Zero -- a concept they'd like to bring home with them.

INFRASTRUCTURE INLET

Philly Streets Department allocates more money to paving, but the Bicycle Coalition says it's still not enough.

If you need more proof that paving is all about bicycling: These six new bike facilities in Tysons will be part of the Fairfax County's paving budget.

Philadelphia Commission on Parks and Recreation rejects a proposed velodrome project in South Philly.

BIG PICTURE BOULEVARD

Los Angeles Walks features a lovely reflection on folding umbrellas, children's names etched into the cement, and the poetic rhythms of walking.

When a local paper runs a major feature on bicycling safety -- including guest opinion pieces on the changing culture of the ride to school and why one reporter stopped riding (spoiler: fear of cars) and the factual counterparts to seven myths about bicycling safety -- BikeWalkLee reprints it for their readers.

As winter turns to spring, Dave Schlabowske of Wisconsin Bike Fed pens an ode to the beauty of the fat bike, which helped him discover his love of winter biking. (Check out the gorgeous photos in this one, too!)

ADVOCACY AVENUE

San Francisco's Market Street is one of the busiest bike routes in the country -- and one of the most dangerous in the city. The city is now considering restrictions on the movement of private automobiles on Market Street to reduce conflicts at intersections and free up space for buses and bicyclists.

Bike improvements on Howard Street, just south of Market, also help move San Francisco toward their Vision Zero goals

Don't stop at the city limits: Active Trans leads the way to the 'burbs with its thoughtfully-produced 2015 Suburban Active Transportation Platform.

The opening of an open-pit mine near the nation's oldest rail-trail, in Sparta, Wisconsin, would bring 50-75 trucks per day down a 13% grade to cross the Elroy-Sparta bike trail.

Cascade Bicycle Club illustrates the long, long timeline of delays on the Burke-Gilman trail and urges officials to finish it, already.

LEGISLATION LANE

Portland's Bicycle Transportation Alliance and Oregon Walks teamed up to win an Advocacy Advance grant to fight for a $20 million revenue source for safe walking and biking projects in the interests of the city's new Vision Zero pledge. The Vision Zero pledge happened but the revenue? Still waiting.

BikeWalkLee is supporting the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee's request for $2 million a year for stand-alone bike/ped retrofit projects.

PROGRAMMING PROMENADE

SF Bike built support for protected bike lanes by featuring a pop-up at the Embarcadero Sunday Streets event last weekend.

Wisconsin Bike Fed's innovative workshop series teaches adults how to teach kids how to bike safely -- and how to advocate for safe biking, too!

Billings TrailNet promotes "Active Living Everyday" classes that help participants get an hour of physical activity just by going about their normal lives, without ever going to a gym.

BikeWalkLee posted a "one-stop shop" website for all things related to Lee County MPO's $10.5 million TIGER grant for its Complete Streets initiative.

GoBIKE Buffalo admits it can't do it all and deputizes all bikey citizens to put on their own Bike Month event!

Bike Pittsburgh looks for creative solutions to provide child care at its Women & Biking Forum.

TRAILER

Can anyone who has seen these movies about women's cycling tell me if they are as awesome as they look?!
