"We're here, and we're kicking @ss"
The dogs days of summer haven't slowed down the active transportation movement. This week we witnessed a dramatic mobilization to end street deaths in New York City; followed Tweets from diverse leaders with powerful perspectives at a national gathering in Minneapolis; cheered legislative successes in the Pacific Northwest, and so much more.
Equity Intersection
For those of us (sadly) not in Minneapolis, glimpses of insight from the tremendous gathering of leaders at the National Brotherhood of Cyclists conference was evident on Twitter — search #nbcmpls and #nbc2015.
In response to an unforgivably superficial take on women and cycling in their hometown newspaper, Cycle Toronto lifted up a sizzling response from Dandyhorse. "To answer your initial question: Where are all the female cyclists? We’re here, and we’re kicking ass."
MassBike shared its own Tale of Two Cities — and a promise to do more to improve bicycling in cities like Brockton, that haven't seen the same investment or attention as places like Boston or Cambridge. "Communities such as these have been orphaned by bike advocacy," acknowledged Richard Fries. "Perhaps the time has come to create a cycling lifestyle for folks who most need the benefits."
Don't miss Alliance leader, Tamika Butler, executive director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, on a free webinar next Tuesday hosted by the Safe Routes to School National Partnership: "Active Transportation and Equity: Key Challenges and Opportunities from the Field."

"With its high density development, adjacent college campus and nearby residential areas," the advocates wrote, "Towson can quickly become a model bikeable community for the county and state."
The Washington Area Bicyclist Association recapped the successful (customized) Winning Campaigns Training for its new Action Committees in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.
Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets strapped 24,890 flowers to a hospital gurney — one for every person injured on NYC streets since January — to showcase the urgency of Vision Zero at a massive mobilization attended by more than 1,000 residents.
Legislation Lane
Washington Bikes wrapped up a banner year in the state legislature, celebrating a state transportation package that boosted investments in biking and Safe Routes to School sevenfold from the 2005 transportation package.
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance released a legislative review, including successes and challenges at the statehouse thus far in the 2015 session.
The Wisconsin Bike Fed announced that, unfortunately, "the state budget is now law and biking took a big hit."
What did the Rhode Island General Assembly do about transportation this summer? Not much, according to the Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition.
Thanks to pressure from bike-ped advocates this week, a U.S. Senate committee passed a transportation bill with three wins for bicycling.

On our June webinar, advocates from Bike East Bay, PEDS and Pacoima Beautiful shared how they're leveraging the success of temporary "pop-up" bicycle and pedestrian projects into long-term solutions for safer and healthier communities — and we summed it all up in a handy tipsheet.
