"Listening to those unheard"
As things heat up on Capitol Hill this week, with debate beginning on the next federal transportation bill, campaigns geared up at the local level as well, with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition opposing police plans to crack down on bicyclists, Washington Bikes pushing back against a threat from Governor Inslee to undermine historic funding levels for biking and Safe Routes, and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia continuing its push to transform a key corridor that sees upwards of 300 crashes per year.
Meanwhile, BikeHouston sought the opinions of often overlooked riders as they engage in the city's bike planning process; a group of female Muslim athletes got the spotlight at the biggest rolling bike celebration in the Midwest; and here at the Alliance we continued our work pulling together an incredible agenda for the National Open Streets Summit in Atlanta. Join us!
Equity Intersection
BikeHouston set out to lift up the voices of bicyclists whose opinions and needs are often overlooked. "BikeHouston intern, Nabiha Hossain, took on the project of interviewing bicycle-dependent residents to ensure their voice is heard in the current Bicycle Master planning process." Read more.
The Iowa Bicycle Coalition welcomed Team Shirzanan, a group of female Muslim athletes from around the world, to this year's RAGBRAI. "Most riders are able to train for RAGBRAI without fear of arrest. Not so for Mona Seraji. The pro snowboarder recounted how she had been arrested on her bike in Tehran [Iran]. Her offense? One centimeter of exposed skin at her ankle."

Advocacy Avenue
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition was shocked to see the San Francisco Police Department cracking down on bicyclists and shifting resources away from enforcing against the deadliest traffic behaviors.
Bike Pittsburgh mobilized against rumble strips on a key commercial corridor — and won. "PennDOT will not be installing the rumble strip on Butler street after community dissatisfaction with the plan."
GObike Buffalo announced its support for the Restore Our Community Coalition (ROCC), which is fighting to revive a corridor destroyed by 1950s expressway construction and reconnect a divided community.
Just one week after launching its Safer Washington Avenue campaign, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia reported that the 2.9 corridor has seen more than 300 crashes per year from 2010 to 2014. "Making Washington Avenue safer NOW is an imperative and the current status quo is not acceptable."
BikeWalkLee shared a mid-year review, acknowledging: "The bottomline is that while there are lots of efforts underway to make it safer for people walking and biking in Lee County [Florida], we need to step up our game, if we expect to lower our stubbornly high bike/ped fatality and injury numbers."
Bike Denver applauded a critical audit of the city's Denver Moves plan, which concluded "Public Works has employed a disjointed and financially inefficient approach, resulting in a fragmented system that includes less user-friendly bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure that does not further the goals of the Denver Moves Plan."
Legislation Lane
Just says after celebrating a banner year in the state legislature, Washington Bikes mobilized to stop the Governor from undermining historic investments in biking and Safe Routes to School.
Damien Newton from Streetsblog interviewed Dave Snyder, executive director of the California Bicycle Coalition, about the latest legislative session in the Golden State.
The U.S. Senate began debating its proposed three-year transportation bill. If approved, it would be the first multi-year transportation bill in a decade. So what could this mean for bicycling on the federal level? Our partners at the League of American Bicyclists explain.
Infrastructure Inlet

The New Jersey Bike + Walk Coalition was disappointed by Princeton's backtracking on a promise to install bike lanes and opting instead for sharrows. "It’s time for municipalities to do more than just pay lip service to their complete streets policies."
The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia was heartened by the news of a protected bike lane coming to Lehigh Avenue.
Bike Delaware praised the reception of a temporary project in Newark that, if constructed, would be the state's first protected bike lane.
