"Bikeways to Everywhere"

In this week's Roundup, California advocates launch a Bikeways to Everywhere campaign, Bike Austin interviews Google about its self-driving cars, two cities push for "minimum grid," a high-profile protected bike lane is saved in Chicago... and more.

 

Advocacy Avenue

The California Bicycle Coalition explained its new Bikeways to Everywhere Initiative, "which advocates for safe, comfortable, conveniently connected bikeway networks for all Californians."

Bike Austin interviewed Google’s Head of Business Operations for its Self-Driving Car Project, getting insight on critical questions like, "What have been some of the biggest challenges in integrating self-driving cars into a complex urban landscape with bikes and pedestrians?"

Advocates in Pennsylvania, Maryland, D.C. and beyond celebrated an announcement from Amtrak that it will soon offer roll-on bicycle service on the Capitol Limited route that runs from Chicago to DC.

The Hawaii Bicycling League debuted a campaign for Minimum Grid HNL, an effort to create a network of protected bikeways within a half-mile of everyone in Honolulu and one mile of everyone in urbanized Oahu.

Cycle Toronto applauded a proposal in the city's budget committee that would commit $20 million to cycling infrastructure to implement a citywide Minimum Grid by 2018.

Equity Intersection

The Active Transportation Alliance rallied its supporters to encourage the implementation of the Gold Line to provide better public transportation for the city's south and southeast sides and "expand transportation equity in Chicago."

Bike Houston spread the word about a Women & Biking Focus Group that will provide insight on the city's developing Bike Plan.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance kicked off a new blog series of Women Bike Rider Profiles.

Bike Pittsburgh recapped 2,430 successful miles biked by students and staff during its Positive Spin youth program.

Infrastructure Inlet

In a big win for the Active Transportation Alliance, Chicago Department of Transportation officials confirmed the Kinzie Street protected bike lane will remain in place.

Bike Delaware lifted up a new study that found "Share the Road" signs are basically useless.

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia celebrated the Schuylkill Trail being named one of the Best Urban Trails by the USA Today.

Mode Shift Omaha highlighted the importance of a good walking environment to the success of bus rapid transit.

The Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee hosted the first of what it hopes are many historic bike rides down Queens Boulevard to try out the first ten blocks of the newly installed interim bike lane.

Boston advocates, including the LivableStreets Alliance and Boston Cyclists Union, applauded the announcement that an intersection where a bicyclist was killed earlier this month will get "a protected bike lane, signs calling for turning motorists to yield to pedestrians and cyclists, and optimized traffic signals."

Bike Walk RVA released a new Bikeways User Guide that "names and describes the facility type, as well as provides a short explanation on the preferred and legal behavior for people who need to travel on or around these bikeways."

Programming Promenade

With the start of school, MassBike unveiled a total redesign of its educational program: MassBikeU.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition celebrated a very special group: more than 2,000 people who have been members of SFBC for 10 years or more.

Los Angeles Walks brought back its printed publication, Footnotes, with a new edition that includes "the status of streets across the city, the people they serve, and the next steps of the journey ahead."

The Wisconsin Bike Fed highlighted the increase in the number of pedestrians killed in the state thus far in 2015 — and how its Share & Be Aware motorist education program addresses some of the common factors in walking fatalities.

Washington Bikes kicked off a 30 Days of Biking challenge for the month of September.

Bike Newport launched a new program that will school local teachers so they can instruct their students on bike skills and safety.

Legislation Lane

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition shared its work around Envision Silicon Valley, a potential 2016 transportation sales tax ballot measure that could provide "a significant source of funding for bike, pedestrian, transit, and general roadway projects."

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition responded to an editorial calling for a mandatory helmet law by suggesting that "before we pass laws on helmets, let’s look at the bigger picture of traffic safety."

California advocates, including the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, are mobilizing to pass a state law that would "ban tolls for people biking and walking all Bay Area toll bridges under state law, including the Golden Gate Bridge."

The California Bicycle Coalition made the case for transportation improvements as a means to address climate protection during the Governor's special legislative session, including "improving and expanding transit service so buses and trains are convenient, reliable and affordable," and "build[ing] networks of protected bike lanes and sidewalks to connect neighborhoods to transit, schools, parks, shopping and work so families don’t need a car for every trip."
