Women Bike, Women Lead

This week in Roundup, Boulder riders renounced the removal of a protected bike lane, California advocates celebrated multiple victories in the state legislature, BikeWalkKC hosted another successful Women's Bicycling Forum, Local Motion rallied hundreds for street safety, Philadelphia will get its first Open Streets event this year (Thanks, Pope Francis!) and more...

Advocacy Avenue

Community Cycles voiced its disappointment at the city's intention to remove a protected bike lane and more than 150 Boulder bicyclists rode to mourn the loss of the Folsom Street bike lane.

Continuing their campaign in response to recent high-profile fatalities, Local Motion in Vermont galvanized more than 300 residents to rally for safe roads.

Building on the excitement around car-free streets during the Pope's visit last week, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia galvanized conversation around bringing an annual Open Streets initiative to Philly.

Bike Walk Lee released a new report that tracks progress in adding biking and walking facilities throughout Lee County over the past four years.

LivableStreets Alliance and the Boston Cyclists' Union cheered Mayor Marty Walsh's intention to sign an "executive order to make Complete Streets the default design standard for Boston's roads."

BikeWalkKC and the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation celebrated a big advocacy victory with the announcement that an old rail line will be transformed into a modern transportation corridor and will connect the popular Katy Trail along the Missouri River to Kansas City.

Boulder advocates chanted "What do we want?- Safe Streets! When do we want them? Yesterday!" in reference to the removal of a separated bike lane.

 

Equity Intersection

The Community Cycling Center celebrated a big victory for Andando en Bicicletas en Cully’s (ABC): "Safe bike storage became a reality at Clara Vista Townhomes, an affordable housing building in Northeast Portland where several members of ABC live. For the first time ever, residents have a safe place to store their bikes near their homes without violating their rental agreements."

Women Bike, Women Lead — a project of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition and Multicultural Communities for Mobility supported by the League of American Bicyclists — released a toolkit on its program designed to "encourage women to build upon their networks and to strengthen their capacity for transforming their communities through active transportation."

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition showed its appreciate for a local family biking leader, with the 2015 Bike to School Champion Award.

Infrastructure Inlet

The Active Transportation Alliance highlighted progress on the Chicago's low-stress bicycling network, with the city "on track to meet Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s goal of building 100 miles of new bike lanes in four short years."

The Minneapolis Bicycling Coalition helped to cut the ribbon on a new protected bike lane near the University of Minnesota.

Bike Cleveland released an RFP for bike sharing in the The Rock and Roll Capitol of the World, with a vendor to be selected by the end of the month.

With the city facing a $1 billion backlog of sidewalk construction and maintenance, Bike Austin explored the concept of "Shared Streets" with two top city leaders.

The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition applauded the approval of 31 miles of new bike lanes.

Transportation Alternatives marked a huge milestone: 1,000 miles of bike lanes in New York City.

Bike Denver hosted a pop-up bike lane on Broadway.

Bike DFW shared its excitement about the inclusion of separated lanes for biking and walking on the new Margaret McDermott Bridge in Dallas.

Programming Promenade

The Wisconsin Bike Fed kicked off 31 days of education and activities in celebration of Wisconsin Walks Month.

Bike Anchorage partnered with the Alaska Injury Prevention Center (AIPC) to debut a new Bike Trailer and Bikeology Curriculum that will be making rounds to Anchorage-area schools.

Bike Cleveland celebrated a special edition of Bike to Work Day this morning in honor of the city's "Greener Way to Work Day."

The East Coast Greenway Alliance hosted more than 200 attendees for the fourth biennial New England Bike-Walk Summit

Washington Bikes kicked off its coffeeneuring "challenge," encouraging supporters to ride to seven different coffee shops over the course of seven weekends.

Legislation Lane

California advocates celebrated several legislative wins at the state level, with the Governor's signature on bills that would 1) allow police departments to offer an education class as an alternative to expensive monetary fines for individuals ticketed while biking and 2) allow the state’s existing network of changeable message signs to be used to notify the public when a hit and run resulting in a death or serious bodily injury has occurred and provide information about the vehicle or suspect involved."

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is mobilizing members to shore up council support for a city-level Idaho Stop Law that's facing a veto from Mayor Ed Lee.

Bike Walk Connecticut helped to win a state bond measure that will put "$8.3 million for urban bikeway, pedestrian connectivity, trails and alternative mobility programs" on the ballot this November.

According to Bike Houston, it's going to be a big election this year and it's pressing its supporters to vote smart by reviewing the candidate questionnaire its circulated to candidates about their visions for biking.

Bike Walk Lee applauded Rep. Kathleen Passidomo for re-introducing her bike safety bill for the 2016 Florida Legislative session.

The Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition helped to win the passage of a city-level 5-foot passing law.
