Walk to School Day!

In this week's Roundup, advocates nationwide helped kids enjoy their daily commute on International Walk to School Day, the Cascade Bicycle Club announced a major new education push in Seattle's public schools, California advocates (again) celebrated the passage of (more) pro-bike legislation, Transportation Alternatives released a new report calling for protected bike lanes on major Manhattan streets, Virginia advocates cut the ribbon on a new 52-mile trail, two successful bike Challenges came to a close... and more.

Advocacy Avenue

Bike Pittsburgh released a new resource for everyday advocates: A How-to guide on starting and growing neighborhood bike/ped committees.

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association announced a new Bike Friendly Ballston campaign to improve cycling in a neighboring city to the nation's capital.

Transportation Alternatives called on New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio "to take a more proactive approach to [traffic] crashes [involving bicyclists and pedestrians] — and that means going to the scene, and being with the families who have been affected."

The Santa Barbara Bike Coalition is fighting to keep a significant bike lane in the Bicycle Master Plan will finally that will "create a safe cross-town bike route and close a dangerous gap on the Eastside."

Yay Bikes' Executive Director, Catherine Girves, shared some thoughts on advocacy in a profile in the local business journal, noting that "Helping people make and maintain change requires an accessible, relevant human touch." 

Walk/Bike Nashville used the Alliance's recent webinar to jumpstart meaningful progress around Vision Zero in its city.

The Active Transportation Alliance celebrated Chicago's designation from PeopleForBikes as the #1 city for biking in office attire.

The California Bicycle Coalition previewed the keynote address from Tamika Butler, executive director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, on "Bicycle Advocacy as Anti-Oppression Work."

Darla LeTourneau of Bike Walk Lee was among 10 women highlighted in Florida Weekly for her leadership in promoting active living and bikeable, walkable communities in Lee County.

The Better Bike Share Partnership, a collaboration between the City of Philadelphia, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, NACTO, and PeopleForBikes, is now accepting letters of interest for Challenge Grants to improve access to and use of bike share in underserved communities.

Transportation Alternatives released a new report that puts data behind advocates' call for protected bike lanes on 5th and 6th Avenues in New York City.

In honor of Walk to School Day, Bike&Walk Montclair helped to install a pop-up protected bike lane along several blocks of roadway leading to Edgemont Elementary School.

Expecting much fanfare around the imminent opening of the long-awaited Manayunk Bridge Trail, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia kicked off a series of blogs to orient riders to the new facilities.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance marked the milestone of more than 1,500 signatures on its petition to make Tualatin Valley Highway safer for biking and walking — and announced that a new grant that will allow the county to plan for such improvements.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition previewed the coming of raised bike lanes.

The San Diego County Bike Coalition asked the City of Coronado to reconsider its decision to suspend further bike safety markings based on a flurry of utterly absurd opposition rightfully lampooned on late-night television.

The Florida Bicycle Association helped to kick off the planning process to develop a network of interconnected trails in three counties on the west coast of the Sunshine State.

Bike Maryland applauded an announcement from Governor Hogan that more than $14 million will be designated to bicycle and pedestrian projects in nearly every county of the state.

Virginia advocates marked the opening of the new Virginia Capital Trail, a 52-mile, dedicated, paved pedestrian and bicycle trail that connects the state’s capital of Richmond to the historic capitals of Jamestown and Williamsburg.

Also in Richmond, Bike Walk RVA shared the results of a recent bike/ped count that showed ridership is up 34% from May 2014 to September 2015, with notable growth along routes with new bicycle infrastructure.

Programming Promenade

The Cascade Bicycle Club helped to unveil Seattle’s first-ever Safe Routes to School Five-Year Action Plan, which includes bike education for 13,000 third through fifth graders starting in 2016.

The National Bike Challenge came to a close and (Bike) Cleveland once again prevailed over (Bike) Pittsburgh in the coveted Rust Belt Battle of the Bikes.

Meanwhile, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance celebrated another successful Bike Commute Challenge with more than 10,500 Portland-area residents logging more than 1.25 million miles during the month of September.

Los Angeles Walks was among the many organizations that celebrated National Walk to School Day with more than 100 schools participating in LA alone.

The Wisconsin Bike Fed spotlighted the East Central region of their state, where 67 schools and over 16,5000 students walked or biked to school.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition profiled a participant in the organization's taxi driver safety education class, who said "the class helped him think differently about his shifts behind the wheel, particularly when he is driving around people biking."

Bicycle Colorado shared its work with the Each One Teach One Horticulture Club, adding group bike rides and cycling education to the elementary school gardening group

Legislation Lane


The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition applauded Governor Jerry Brown signing a bill to ban tolls on people walking and biking the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge...

... and the California Bicycle Coalition celebrated the signing of a bill that "will help foster the use of electric bicycles while ensuring public safety and simplifying enforcement."

The Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota was present at the ceremonial signing of a vulnerable road user bill that they've been working on with a wide array of partners for the past five years.

The Active Transportation Alliance in Chicago supported a city council committee's plan to reduce parking space requirements — and encourage transit-oriented development — for new developers.

Bike Walk Mississippi applauded the passage of a Complete Streets policy for the City of Jackson.

The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition cheered the appointment of ABC member and volunteer, Becky Katz, as the city’s first Chief Bicycle Officer. 

BikeHouston shared a dramatic recent rise in its membership, growing from just 80 members 18 months ago to more than 900 now.
