The Need for (Slower) Speed

In this edition of Roundup, Richmond wins big with the passage of a 50-year plan for a 360-mile network of new bicycle pathways and trails; Walk SF calls for the city to "address deadly speeding"; Los Angeles advocates coalesce around equity goals for an upcoming ballot measure; half-a-dozen organizations rally for Vision Zero on World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims... plus a wealth of bike/walk job postings!


Advocacy Avenue

Investing in Place, along with local partners like the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, unveiled several key priorities and goals for a new ballot measure, including: "all residents have access to reliable and affordable transportation options; a transportation system that is safe for everyone; and investments that prioritize historically disadvantaged communities."

Transportation Alternatives in New York City came out strong against jaywalking crackdowns, noting that in too many fatal collisions "NYPD is focused primarily on what the pedestrian may have done wrong, rather than on the motorist’s responsibility to use due care when operating a two-ton vehicle in the most pedestrian-rich city in North America."

The Active Transportation Alliance proved the efficacy of local advocacy and coalition building as their push to revive funding for the No. 11 bus in North Chicago was successful.

In the run-up to World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims, Walk SF called attention to the urgent need to "address deadly speeding" if San Francisco hopes to achieve Vision Zero.

Paths for People (formerly the Edmonton Bike Coalition) released an interactive online map showing 10 years of collisions in Edmonton between cars and people walking or riding their bikes.

Mode Shift Omaha mobilized its supporters to "take action to prevent our city’s history from being overrun by [car] parking."

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition celebrated the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors unanimously approving the Wiggle project.

Following a trip to Denmark, MassBike's program manager shared lessons learned on "people-focused policy and design."

The New York Bicycling Coalition schooled its followers on "why you need to stay off of social media after a crash."

A number of Alliance member organizations organized events in honor of World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims.

 

Equity Intersection

As part of our State of the Movement report, we shared an interview with Ed Ewing, Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Cascade Bicycle Club.

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia recapped its work partnering with Indego bike share and local community groups, including a Bike Ride for Peace in South Philadelphia and a ride in North Philly with Dare 2 Hope, a suicide prevention group.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance shared a post from the Alliance's Naomi Doerner on "why it is critical for Vision Zero advocates to support the Campaign Zero movement to end police violence."

For your podcast cue: Tamika Butler, Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition; Rio Contreras of Multicultural Communities for Mobility and LA Rooted; and Adonia Lugo, Professor of Chicana/o studies at California State University Los Angeles discussed "Equity in the Bike Movement" on KPFK Public Radio. 

The Wisconsin Bike Fed explained how it's working to improve equity in high school cycling.

Bike Pittsburgh is rallying its members to donate basic need items and help distribute them to area homeless — by bike.

BikeSD hit the streets to interview a diverse handful of non-spadex-wearing, everyday bicyclists about why they ride — and what would make biking better for them.

 

Infrastructure Inlet

Bike Walk RVA, a program of the Sports Backers in Richmond, VA, celebrated a big victory with the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors signing off on a 50-year plan for a 360-mile network of new bicycle pathways and trails.

Bike Austin mobilized its supporters to sign a petition to include a shared use path for pedestrians and bicyclists along a tollway project in the Texas capital.

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition applauded the first draft of the city's Complete Streets Policy as a "good start" toward the creation of a nation-leading policy that leads to meaningful improvements.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition celebrated the completion of the city's first raised bike lane.

Walk Bike Nashville cheered the announcement of $15 million in funding for new "new sidewalk and street-paving projects."

Bike Pittsburgh applauded the completion of an extension to the Penn Avenue protected bike lane, "complete with a sweet merge lane."

Bike Cleveland was among many to scratch its head over this odd orientation of a buffered bike lane in their city.

Programming Promenade

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance in Portland shared a three-month recap of its new Women Bike program.

The New Jersey Bike + Walk Coalition "provided law enforcement officers in five counties with training necessary to help them understand how New Jersey’s motor vehicle code applies to bicyclists."

GObike Buffalo announced that a grant from the New York Bicycling Coalition will fund a new Travel with Care campaign in their community.

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia announced it will co-host the city’s first-ever Vision Zero Conference in Philly on December 3.

The Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition distributed free bike lights to riders in need of illumination in Providence.

Bike Easy provided its Walk & Roll safety sessions to 200 fourth and fifth graders at a local elementary school — and got a surprise visit from Mayor Belinda Constant!

The Wisconsin Bike Fed announced its Fire Up Your Feet awards, which providing funding to help "families, students and schools work together to create active lifestyles which inspire all children to be healthy and physically active."

Comings and Goings

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia shared an interview with its new Better Bike Share Community Liaison, Pati Gutiérrez. "Gutiérrez is a daughter of Mexican immigrants, who dedicated to social justice and access for low-income communities of color. Before joining the Bicycle Coalition’s team, she worked for different nonprofits supporting labor issues and affordable housing."

Phoenix Bikes welcomed Raymond Duran, to fill its newly created position of Program Assistant.

Michael Payne announced he will step down from his position as Executive Director of Bike Houston, as his family moves to the Netherlands next March.

Noah Budnick is leaving his post as the Executive Director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

Washington Bikes and the Cascade Bicycle Club shared an update on their merger talks. (And we shared the story behind the unification of two groups in Austin in our State of the Movement report!)
