Big Wins at City Hall

In this edition of Roundup, two major Vision Zero Action Plans are released in Boston and DC, Chicago advocates welcome the opening of the city's first bus rapid transit project, Cycle Toronto wins funding to keep folks rolling through the winter, a merger in the Northwest creates the nation's largest statewide bike advocacy group, WalkBoston gets a special honor for its 25th anniversary... and much more.

Advocacy Avenue

Transportation Alternatives released a a new report that showed fewer than 1% of the drivers involved in roughly 4,000 hit-and-run crashes resulting in injury or death were charged with a crime.

Boston advocates, including the Boston Cyclists Union, celebrated the release of the city's Vision Zero Action Plan, noting particular excitement about a pilot Neighborhood Slow Streets program.

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association also applauded the launch of DC's Vision Zero Plan, which includes strategies for city agencies as well as regulatory changes and a legislative package.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance in Portland mobilized its supporters to preserve a dedicated funding source for sidewalks and bike lanes that resulted in $27 million for multi-modal projects in 2015, but could be raided for all road uses, including freight, in 2016.

The Active Transportation Alliance welcomed the debut of Chicago's first bus rapid transit project (this weekend), noting "the addition of dedicated bus lanes rightly gives transit riders priority downtown while freeing up space for protected bike lanes and people walking.

Bike Walk Connecticut shared its advocacy priorities for 2016-2017, including getting the state to adopt mode share goals for biking and walking.

Ride Illinois (formerly the League of Illinois Bicyclists) is pushing the state to "install road signs that are more explicit about how to share the road."

The East Coast Greenway Alliance shared news of Amtrak expanding bicycle roll-on service to more ECG cities between New York City and Miami.

Tucson revelled in its designation from PeopleForBikes as the Best City for Everyday Biking in America!

And, in Boston, the Prudential Tower was lit up in orange to honor the 25th anniversary of WalkBoston.

Equity Intersection

The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition went on a ride to give all staff a deeper understanding of the organization's outreach work in the county's diverse Southeast Cities — an effort supported by an Advocacy Advance grant from the Alliance and League of American Bicyclists.

Bike Austin talked to the local NPR station about its work with a local senior center (in partnership with the Ghisallo Cycling Initiative) to help older adults get active on trikes.

Bike Calgary applauded a rise in women biking; according to a city study female ridership has jumped 9% and 10% respectively on two streets with newly installed cycle tracks.

The California Bicycle Coalition highlighted the work of a youth-led movement in Santa Ana that won $2.3 million in grant funding for a protected bike lane in their community.

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition continued to elevate equity in its work, with the organization's executive director stating: "We are committed to proactively doing what we can within our work around biking to address racial disparities, institutional racism, and injustices. We know that biking is only a small part of a much larger body of work that touches all parts of government and society, but we know that biking can play a role."

Infrastructure Inlet

From Washington, D.C. to Redondo Beach, Calif., advocates across the country celebrated their inclusion on PeopleForBike's list of the "10 Best New Bike Lanes of 2015."

In its effort to keep folks riding through the winter, Cycle Toronto succeeded in winning a new $650,000 annual commitment from the city "for the priority network of snow routes for cyclists as well as the creation of new snow route signage to clearly communicate the streets cyclists can rely on in the days following snow storms."

The California Bicycle Coalition shared 3 Great Things about the CalTrans Separated Bikeway Guidance, including protected intersections.

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition supported a plan to complete a missing link of a bicycle and pedestrian trail which, when completed, would allow folks to "commute on a car-free path for 20 miles from Alviso down to Almaden."

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine applauded the coming installation of more than 3,300 wayfinding signs statewide along the East Coast Greenway.

Bike Calgary lifted up a new study that showed complaints about the city's cycle track pilot project have decreased precipitously since the network opened, dropping from 20 per day to less than 10 in a matter of weeks.

GObike Buffalo celebrated the City of Buffalo receiving nearly $2.5 million in state funding for two projects to turn Niagara Street into a "multi-modal corridor" including bike/ped facilities and improved transit stations.

BikeAthens showed some green, applauding the first section of a bike lane intended to reduce right hooks.

The California Bicycle Coalition cheered two miles of protected bike lanes in Modesto.

The Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition called new bike lanes on State Street "the best on-street bike facility in GR."

And Walk Bike Nashville succeeded in getting construction barricades out of a local bike lane.

Legislative Lane

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia celebrated the City Council passing Philly’s first piece of Vision Zero legislation — amending the city’s Traffic Code with a $5 fee on all motor vehicle registrations which will go to roadway improvements.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition applauded the city transportation committee recommending passage of SF’s Bike Yield Law by the full Board of Supervisors.

Florida advocates, including BikeWalkLee, praised the Florida Department of Transportation on the release of the agency’s Complete Streets Implementation Plan.

Our partners at Bike Law USA made the case that "Motorists Must Face Criminal Charges For Killing Bicyclists."

Programming Promenade

Share your organization's program successes by submitting a proposal for the 2016 Pro Walk Pro Bike Pro Place conference — applications are due January 29.

Bike Walk RVA released a new RVA Bikeways Map, an interactive online tool featuring the length and locations of the region's bikeways.

Bicycle Colorado reflected on a successful year of Safe Routes to School programming that taught safe cycing skills to more than 3,115 students.

The Virginia Bicycling Federation celebrated the Richmond Times-Dispatch naming the Richmond 2015 team — the group behind September’s bike races that brought international attention to the region — its inaugural Person of the Year.

The Hawaii Bicycling League hit the streets to give out free bike lights in Honolulu.

The Wisconsin Bike Fed was merry at the doubling of attendance at its Santa Cycle Rampage with nearly 2,000 Santa-clad riders turning out for the event.
