Just one week after we debuted Equity Intersection in the Roundup, we're excited to highlight significant steps this week from the Bicycle Transportation Alliance in Portland, which announced its support for an anti-profiling bill in the state legislature, and a trio of Chicago groups uniting behind a pledge to "creat[e] a diverse, inclusive, and equitable bicycle environment" in the Windy City.

In just five short years, Atlanta Streets Alive has grown from 5,000 to 100,000 participants, shifting residents' and policymakers' perceptions about biking and walking in the nation's 9th largest city. How did ciclovia gain traction in car-centric southern metropolis that boasts 5.5 million residents? In anticipation of our National Open Streets Summit in her city this September, I spoke with Rebecca Serna of the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition to learn more.

Nine months ago, at our 2014 Leadership Retreat, nearly 200 advocates joined us in taking a clear-eyed look at whose needs and interests we’re serving in our work to create more walkable, bikeable, liveable communities — and who’s still on the margins of the biking and walking movement. From that gathering there was widespread consensus: We need to deepen our commitment and take tangible steps toward more inclusive engagement and, ultimately, more equitable advocacy outcomes.

Last month, I joined a National Call on Transportation Equity hosted by PolicyLink. Tamika Butler, the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Bicycle Coalition was on the call, too — and she asked a question that's on many people's minds. "As policing is becoming more and more of an issue in this country — though, for many low-income folks, it's always been an issue — how do we balance our Vision Zero work with what that would mean for enforcement and what that could potentially mean for profiling in these low-income communities of color," Butler asked.

Do you wish you had a bigger database to activate supporters for a new bike lane or pedestrian plaza in your community? Or to fight a cut in state or local funding for biking and walking? PeopleForBikes has gathered more than 1 million names united for better biking in the United States — and their Local Engagement Portal is an opportunity for local and state advocacy groups to tap into that wealth of potential advocates. Last week, we hosted a webinar with PFB to share more.

In recent Roundups we've covered the launch of Indego in Philly, Green Bike in Boise and expansions of bike sharing systems in many other cities. This week, the Bay Area celebrated the expansion of its program to more than 7,000 bikes by the end of 2017 and this weekend Pittsburgh advocates will help to roll out their city's Healthy Ride System, which includes 50 stations connecting 11 different neighborhoods.

Kristen Jeffers has been a storyteller since her earliest years, writing her first book in grade school and winning an award for her narrative talent. More than a decade later, the Greensboro, NC, native wrote a post on Grist that helped launch her blog status as The Black Urbanist. And now she’s bringing her powerful perspective as a planner and advocate to the people powered movement, taking a post at BikeWalkKC as its communications and membership manger.

The last thing we want to do is waste even a minute of your time. That's why we're working with Fission Strategy to make sure the content of our upcoming National Training is tailored specifically to the needs and interests of your organization. And we're not just talking in vague generalities — we're gathering information from all participants so, when you walk out of the "Organizing, Leadership and Digital Strategy for a Stronger Movement," you have meaningful skills and actions steps to move your organization forward.

Last week, Advocacy Advance released a new resource, "Active Transportation Equity: A Scan of Existing Master Plans." While the report is not a comprehensive list, it cites 38 examples of active transportation master plans that include definitions of equity, equity goals, and — in some cases — performance measures for equity. But why this equity resource? What’s its purpose? Great questions — and you aren’t alone in asking them.
