It's hard to believe that just 10 years ago there was a gaping void in data related to bicycling and walking on a state and city level. In 2007, the Alliance helped to change that with its first Benchmarking Report. Now, nearly a decade later, that comprehensive resource propels advocates and stakeholders at every level. As we prepare for the 2016 Benchmarking Report launch next month, we explored the critical value — and evolution — of the report with two top researchers.

It’s that time of year again! Please nominate stand-out advocacy leaders in your community for the 2016 Advocacy Awards! To recognize excellence in the bicycle and pedestrian advocacy movement, the Alliance has held the Advocacy Awards since 2009 — and this year we’re donning our sparkles alongside the League of American Bicyclists, co-hosting an Awards Gala on the opening night of the 2016 National Bike Summit & Women’s Forum.

In coming weeks and months, state legislatures will kick into high gear and advocates will fight for funding and policies that make biking better. What did we see at statehouses in 2015 and what can we expect in 2016? Last week, we hosted a webinar with PeopleForBikes to explore key trends across the country — and give you a primer on bills that passed in 2015 and proposals that are pending for 2016.

When we released our State of the Movement report last year, one of the most notable findings was the massive growth in bike/walk advocacy staff. As our professional ranks expand, how can we use performance reviews to help staff become as successful, innovative and effective as they can be? How do we tie personnel to program goals? And are their new tools to make this process easier? Last month we explored these questions on our Distance Learning Webinar.

In 2016, the Alliance will celebrate 20 years of serving state and local bike/walk advocates. As we reflect on our fundamental role in the growth and professionalization of the movement, we know that to continue to serve YOU, our members, we can't simply rest on our successes. We need to change with the times, as well. We don't have all the answers yet, but here's where we're headed in 2016 and beyond.

There’s no doubt: The bike/walk movement is gaining momentum, but we still face significant obstacles. So in our State of the Movement report, we asked Alliance member organizations to share what challenges they're facing in their work. We found that our movement has some similar — and distinct — difficulties compared to the nonprofit sector at large and identified the top 10 most reported hurdles facing walk/bike organizations.

Advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in biking and walking has become a stated goal of a number of Alliance organizations. In our State of the Movement report, we asked our members who they're partnering with most frequently right now — and were somewhat surprised by the results. Who's missing from this list and how can we start to authentically bridge critical gaps in our work by partnering more closely with community groups?
